My Specialties: I am very organized, I love to make people laugh, I can be a little sarcastic (just a little), and most people would say that I am a pretty good motivator (I always wanted to be the next Zig Ziglar). If I can’t motivate you then I will be very organized in my plan to sarcastically tease you, while others laugh about it, until you become motivated.
Pre-CUMC years: I knew at an early age that I wanted to be in ministry. My mother says that she knew I was called into ministry when I was a teenager. My jobs have included: working in children’s ministry at another church, working in the business world (accounting, financial analyst, manager, etc), and coaching soccer. Yes, someone actually paid me money to be a full time soccer coach (What could be easier? Getting paid to play with kids? Oh, wait…never mind. LOL.). Being a dad has always been a top priority. You know all the things that come along with that: scout leader, soccer coach, spiritual advisor, classroom parent, camp coordinator, cook, maid, chauffer, homework assistant, etc.
The People in My Life: My son Hunter who is in 6th grade and is the greatest blessing in my life. He is an amazing young man who is very considerate of others, a great friend to many, a caring person, and quite funny!!! He has been a straight A student his entire life, a follower of Christ, a solid defender on the soccer field and basketball court, a boy scout, and an animal lover (even cat’s...I just don’t understand the guy)!
What makes me laugh: Life, but it makes me want to cry sometimes too. Not when I’m around your kids…they make me laugh. I think that laughter is one of the best medicines in the world and it doesn’t require a prescription. If you don’t know how to laugh, then call me and I will show you…maybe even write you a prescription! My son makes me laugh every day.
Best Advice I Ever Received: It came from my dad, and I’m not sure if it was advice or a threat. Either way, he said “no matter what you are doing…ALWAYS do your best…God expects it from you”. Could you imagine what the world would be like if we all embraced that mentality?
What I do for CUMC: I am the Director of Children’s Minstries and I do whatever I have to do to make the kids laugh, want to be here, develop friendships, and to learn about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Favorite Food: Mexican Food of course! Do they make other kinds of food? It has to be Chuy’s though. I guess that makes me a Mexican Food Snob.
Favorite Movies: Meet The Parents and Facing The Giants. I know there are other ones but I don’t remember.
Favorite TV Shows: Chuck Absolutely, too funny. It’s one of two TV shows I watch (find me in the hallways at church and I’ll tell you the other).
Favorite Book in the Bible: That’s hard…I love a lot of them. Proverbs is nice, but makes me think I’m reading a fortune cookie. I guess my favorite verse in the Bible can be found in the 24th book, chapter 29...verse 11. Let me know if you like it too. I believe we all need to be more “hands-on” with our Bibles. So, you will have to grab yours to look it up.
Favorite Color: Crimson Red
Things I Love: My family, friends, life, etc. AND…OU Football. It’s a must! Boomer Sooner!
Thing’s I Hate: I don’t like the word “hate”; too strong of a word. I “dislike” the color orange (read above for a better understanding).
What Have I Done for Other Churches: Children’s Ministry and Lay Counseling.
What makes me laugh: Children! I love talking to children; you learn so much more from them than you can ever teach them. They say the cutest most insightful things.
Favorite Foods: I love food, I love to cook and bake, especially cupcakes. I love pizza, Mexican (Los Cucos), Italian, seafood, and Chinese.
Favorite TV Shows: TLC is my favorite channel. 19 Kids and Counting, Quints by Surprise (I babysat all the quints on the show, ask me about it, I have pictures), Cake Boss and any cooking show.
Favorite Book in the Bible: That's hard; I like different books for different times, probably Ephesians though.
Pre CUMC years: I grew up in the Cypress area, attended Cypress Springs High school and Holy Covenant UMC. I was very active in youth programs such as Midwinter, youth council, and mission trips...I did it all. When I left for Waco, Texas to attend Baylor University I became active in Trinity Luther Church. I was a co-youth leader, helped run the pre-school VBS and started a children's church program at Trinity. While at Baylor, I was active in Mission Waco, which is a huge non-profit Christian outreach in the heart of the city's project housing. Mission Waco runs King's Club which meets in the projects every Saturday to hang out with the kids and offer a bible lesson. I also volunteered for a non-profit called Waco Youth Connections which helps the area schools and worked in a low-income after school program called To Cool for Trouble.
Reading: I'm not much for reading. I read my bible, and do have some favorite books, just don't have the time to sit down and read. When I sit I generally fall asleep!
Best Advise: "God's always got a bigger plan, you just got to be patient" (from my best friend and cousin Lindsay).
People in my life: I just got married in December 2010, I am a newly wed. My husband and I have been together for over four years now and we love the married life. My family is also close by and spending time with them is great. My parents live near Katy, TX with my sister Joey who is 26 and attends Reach here in Cypress. My sister, Vanessa lives in the Willowbrook area with her son, Michael who is a toddler. My family is loud and funny (sometimes embarrassing), but I love them. They have supported my husband and me through it all! My husband's family is also not far away in Waco, TX. Summer is our awesome dog; he is a golden/collie mix.
What I love: Jewelry making, scrapbooking and any arts and crafts. Hanging out with my husband and my dog is great which generally takes us outside. Swimming is also a favorite and generally the dog, Summer, is the first in the pool! Attending Baylor football and basketball games is fun, especially when David Crowder performs songs he has written for Baylor. I'm a true Baylor fan no matter if they win or lose.
What I do for CUMC: I help plan and organize any and all things having to do with children. I am very excited to get to know all of the kids here!
My specialties: I am very organized and a bit of a neat freak. I love nurturing children to help guide them to be loving disciples of Christ. I am passionate about teen pregnancy prevention and teen parent education. I also loving teaching new parents all I have learned from my six years in child care.
More than 40 years ago my husband and I came to visit CUMC. We were greeted so warmly that we chose to join the following Sunday. Little did I know that my journey of faith would allow me to grow up in this church. I have had the opportunity to teach Sunday School, direct VBS, become UMW president, serve on numerous committees, participate in countless Bible Studies and even take care of lawn and landscaping when the need arose.
I have been privileged to be on staff of Wee Wuns since its beginning in 1971. I have served as director for the past 35+ years. The blessings I have known in this position are far more than I could count. It has been a joy to get to know thousands of young children and their families.
My husband, Jim, and I have been married for almost 45 years. Our 3 grown sons and their spouses are all members of CUMC.
The time I get to spend with my grandchildren is precious to me. They are all beautiful gifts from God. We enjoy cooking, going for walks, visiting and feeding our animals and admiring fluffy clouds and amazing sunrises and sunsets. I am so proud that all 8 have had the opportunity to be student in Wee Wuns.
I am the Program Director for Wee Wins and have worked here for 24 years. I started work at Wee Wuns because my children were attending and I found my calling in life as far as a job is concerned. I love Wee Wuns and I am so happy to work here. The sweetest sound I know is the laughter of a child. My Granddaughter Colombe attended school here and what a great start she has had. Many former students have brought their children here. That says a lot about the reputation of Wee Wuns. I have 3 children and 4 Grandchildren with 3 more on the way. I love to spend time in Galveston with my family. They say that your home is where your heart is. If that is true then my home is here at Wee Wuns.
Everyday brings new challenges and every year means graduation ceremonies and new students to teach and love. Many times we have waiting list because all the classes are full. That speaks a lot as to how the Wee Wuns Ministry is thought of by the community we serve. I consider it an honor and a blessing to be allowed to do something I truly love.
Two of my favorite things in life are babies and organizing people. With each one, you get to see a fabulous finished product. Each time I see a child, they are a new wonderful creation, growing and changing right before my eyes, a new "product" every day. Being Childcare Coordinator is exciting. Not only do I get to coordinate and work with a great group of ladies, but I get to play with, love and care for children every day.
Besides working at CUMC, I am a preschool teacher, Vacation Bible School co-director, a PTO volunteer at elementary and middle school and a taxi driver. My two children (ages 6 and 12) and husband keep me pretty busy too!
