Worship Arts Director

The pre-CUMC years: I sat around and played music until I was old enough to start teaching music. The only day job I’ve ever had was in a coffee shop. I was a waiter for two days.

What I am reading: Bible. Red Letters, Tom Davis. Irresistible Invitation, Maxie Dunnam. Martin Chuzzlewit, Charles Dickens. Children of Hurin, J.R.R. Tolkien. I read the Comics everyday, and a lot of political theory/philosophy, but never political punditry. My wife makes fun of me a lot, but I generally have a different book for every room in the house, plus one for the car and one for the studio. Literature is my only hobby.

My great fear is being stuck somewhere without a book.

Best advice I ever received: Listen until the period. It’s really hard to do, but it improves your relationship with anyone you communicate with

The people in my life: My wife Patty with whom I was twitterpated when I first saw her play the violin when she was in the 8th grade. My sons Ephraim Liam and Callum. I never imagined I could be responsible for the welfare of people so beautiful, loving, goofy, and ridiculously intelligent. They are all daily blessings.

Where I blog: I do not blog. I do not read blogs. My preferred method of interacting with computers would be with a hammer.

What I love: Books.

What I hate: Technology.

What I do for CUMC: I play the guitar and sing some songs. I try to be articulate when I say the page numbers for The Faith We Sing at the Traditional Praise and Worship Service at 9:30 in the sanctuary. I have also played the violin at some services. I try to encourage and enable people in the music program to use their talents for worship. I also apologize a lot to the wonderful people in the nursery that take care of my children while I am participating in worship activities.

The college years: Lots of practicing while I studied Jazz and Classical guitar at the University of North Texas. Lots of reading and writing during the last year as I finished my Political Science degree at the University of Houston.

What makes me laugh: Most everything. Nothing gets taken too seriously during the day.

What have I done for other churches: I played in a church in Denton, TX that met in an old movie theater on the town square. We played pop music that related to the sermon. One week that include playing Michael Jackson’s “Beat It”. There is still some moderate lingering guilt for this. Hopefully it spoke to somebody.

In a previous life: I don’t remember any previous lives, but I hope I was tall.

Most likely to be when Divine inspiration hits: In the middle of playing thousand questions with my sons. This game tends to occupy the bulk of our time.

Favorite color: Purple. Blue. PurplyBlueish hues.

Favorite foods: Pasta, roasted meats.

5 ways to describe me: squatty, loud, male modelish, primally refined, politically unrefined

The people in my life: I'm married to an incredible woman, Tami for 20yrs. My beautiful daughter Courtney who is in college and my long haired son Drew who is in 9th grade.

My favorite color: White....I guess that’s a shade so I might need to go with yellow to properly answer the question.

My favorite food: Without a doubt chicken wings, all flavors

What I love:  Passion!!!!!!  EXTREME PASSION!!!!! In all that I do. I enjoy activities that test my trust in God, I love to play music, skateboard "Vert only”, weight lifting, motorcycling, bicycling, volleyball, hiking, mission work and construction projects.

What I dislike: Apathy...ie: Whatever

What makes me laugh: stupid comedy movies

Best advice I ever received: Are you who you want to be?  And, go big or go home.

Favorite Book: Jonathon Livingston Seagull

Favorite Book in the Bible: Ecclesiastes

Favorite Movie: Out Cold or Blazing Saddles

Where do I blog:  Huh???

Where am I from: Born in a suburb of Chicago, moved around as a young child and then settled in Sioux Falls, SD for my teenage years on. I spent 9-10 yrs as a travelling road musician with cover and original bands. went back to school in the 90's and moved to Texas in 1996 and been here since.

Etc...etc...I detest texting...it is very impersonal...and because I'm no good at it.

I think cell phones and such should be Illegal to use while operating a motor vehicle...did I mention I ride a motorcycle...don't make me kick your fender.

I think the toilet seat should always be left up...its safest there and won't get soiled

I think some clothing should come with an age and weight limit.

The length of my hair is a reminder that I still have the ability to have hair....

When I am singing with my eyes are CLOSED, no I'm not squinting.

I'm not deaf I just like it LOUD.  I believed music should swallow you...not spit at you.

Lowend is GOOD...God created it, he says so...

My life story summed up in one line by my second grade teacher..."Wastes time and distracts others"

Love God, love life and be a friend,

DAV

Terri Welch
Production and Drama

I am the Production Coordinator for the Worship Center. I make sure everyone involved in the services has what they need, and try to ensure the services end on time. The latter involves gently reminding the pastor before the service how long he or she has to preach.

I also write and direct the short dramatic sketches that appear in the worship services from time to time.

At my former church, Champion Forest Baptist, I produced a quarterly marriage seminar called 2:24, and wrote and directed sketches for the youth choir to perform on their mission trips.

I am a cancer survivor, and started a blog, which I still maintain,  -- chemogirlspeaksout@blogspot.com -- at the beginning of my treatment so my far-flung friends and family could keep up with my progress through the treatment.

I hail from the midwest and am an aluma of Wichita State University, whose mascot is a giant shock of wheat. My degrees are in French and International Studies, which come in very handy in the middle of suburban Houston.

I am married to Mike, and have two daughters, Tess, born in 2000, and Jillian, born a scant fifteen months later. I left the timing of our second child's arrival up to God. God's timing was a lot earlier than I had anticipated.

I am addicted to reading. I am so addicted to reading that if I am eating lunch, and don't have a book to read, I will read the ketchup label, mentally re-write it, and then see how many words I can make out of "Heinz Ketchup".

I am currently reading "Following Jesus Without Embarrassing God", "The Jesus Prescription for a Happy Life", and the works of Tamora Pierce. When I am not reading, I love to watch movies, scrapbook, and ignore housework.
